William Stryker
Reverend William Stryker
A fundamentalist preacher who believes mutants are abominations against God, Stryker is the X-Men's most terrifying human villain because he needs no powers (only conviction and a platform). Chris Claremont created him for the landmark God Loves, Man Kills graphic novel, and he has since led the Purifiers in multiple crusades against mutantkind. His ideology represents the real-world hatred the X-Men were created to allegorize.

Marvel Graphic Novel #5: God Loves, Man Kills
1982
Stryker stands as one of the X-Men's most viscerally hateful villains, embodying the religious extremism and anti-mutant prejudice that makes the franchise resonate. His role leading the Purifiers and his connection to Nightcrawler's origin story (particularly in Chris Claremont's "God Loves, Man Kills") cement him as the definitive face of mutant persecution. The contrast between his calculated cruelty in the comics and Brian Cox's memorable portrayal in the Fox films has made him a character who transcends both mediums.
