A shapeshifter who has lived for over a century, wearing countless faces and identities. Mystique is Nightcrawler's biological mother, Rogue's adoptive mother, and Destiny's wife (connections that make her the most dangerous kind of enemy, one who is also family). She leads through manipulation, fights for her own survival above all ideologies, and trusts no one completely.

Fan Sentiment

Mystique remains one of the X-Men's most morally complex antagonists, with her shapeshifting abilities matched only by her capacity for ruthless manipulation and betrayal. Her relationship with Destiny anchors her most sympathetic moments, but fans readily point to her cruel treatment of other mutants (particularly the horrific Dazzler incident in Uncanny X-Men 2013) as proof that her villainy runs deeper than survival instinct. While overexposure in the film franchise diluted her mystique somewhat, comic readers continue to debate whether her actions stem from maternal love for Nightcrawler and Rogue or pure self-interest.
