The New Mutants #8
October 1983
Magma remains a beloved New Mutants mainstay with standout moments in Claremont's original run, though her visual design sparks ongoing debate. Many fans who grew up with X-Men Evolution's Afro-Brazilian interpretation were disappointed to discover the comics portray her as blonde and European-looking, leading to persistent calls for her design to better reflect her Brazilian heritage. Despite the controversy over her appearance, her fiery powers and Roman backstory have earned her a dedicated following who argue she deserves more recognition and page time.
