The original leader of the Acolytes and a manipulative schemer who used his power to amplify other mutants' abilities — often to dangerous, destabilizing levels. Cortez orchestrated the apparent death of Magneto aboard Asteroid M to martyr him and seize control of the Acolytes for himself. A recurring antagonist through the 1990s, Cortez represents the fanaticism and betrayal at the heart of Magneto's cult of personality.
