Fabian Cortez
Fabian Cortez
The original leader of the Acolytes and a manipulative schemer who used his power to amplify other mutants' abilities (often to dangerous, destabilizing levels). Cortez orchestrated the apparent death of Magneto aboard Asteroid M to martyr him and seize control of the Acolytes for himself. A recurring antagonist through the 1990s, Cortez represents the fanaticism and betrayal at the heart of Magneto's cult of personality.

Fabian Cortez remains one of the X-Men's most memorable opportunistic villains, a power-boosting mutant whose repeated betrayals of Magneto and the Acolytes cemented his reputation as ambitious and utterly untrustworthy. His Krakoa-era redemption in Al Ewing's S.W.O.R.D. surprised many readers, with Valerio Schiti's sleek redesign helping reposition him as a competent space station administrator. While he'll never escape his legacy as a scheming manipulator from the '90s Acolytes era, his recent characterization has added unexpected depth to what was once a one-dimensional villain.
